I thought to myself, lord, what the heck has happened while I was asleep? Click open the post, the blog claims that (they)\u00a0\u5fd8\u5173\u8bdd\u7b52 \u5bfc\u81f4\u8bc4\u8bba\u906d\u76f4\u64ad forgot to shut the microphone lead to comments being broadcast<\/em>. (Not sure it’s an off line comment.) There are three screenshots with Byron McDonald’s comment, and Chinese translation underneath.<\/p>\n

  1. McDonald said, That little 14 year old from China dropped the ball baby<\/em>. The Chinese translation is \u90a3\u4e2a\u4e2d\u56fd\u768414\u5c81\u9009\u624b\u53d1\u751f\u4e86\u5931\u8bef<\/li>\n
  2. … went out like stink<\/em> …\u00a0\u6563\u53d1\u7740\u81ed\u5473\u7684\u51fa\u73b0 … for which, it translated into The emergence of a bad odor<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. … died like a pig<\/em> …\u6b7b\u5f97\u50cf\u5934\u732a<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Translations of 1 and 3 are ok but 2 is way off: there is no way I would and could believe a sportcaster would say something like this because swimmers all smell chlorine.\u00a0Given the context, I guessed that\u00a0like stink<\/em> means she got off to a good\/quick start – this dictionary confirms<\/a>. Within a few hours after posting, the blog has gathered more than 2000 comments, overwhelmingly angry toward the sportcaster and many are demanding an apology. My comment<\/a> got 1 thumb up but the four comments below have thousands, from 6,696 to 2,185.<\/p>\n

    Calling a girl pig<\/em> isn’t nice but I think it’s the misunderstanding of went like\u00a0stink<\/em>\u00a0got the Chinese netizens worked up. Below, another site titles CBC\u89e3\u8bf4\u5458\u8fb1\u9a82\u4e2d\u56fd14\u5c81\u6e38\u6cf3\u8fd0\u52a8\u5458\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e00\u6b21\u5168\u7403\u7f51\u6c11\u90fd\u6124\u6012\u4e86. On August 14, three days later:<\/p>\n

    The first red ink translated “went out like stink and died like a pig<\/em>” as ‘\u53d1\u81ed\u7684\u6b7b\u732a\u2018 = smelly dead pig\u00a0<\/em>in English. I don’t know what to say because it’s grossly incorrect.<\/p>\n

    Canada<\/a>\u00a0is a liberal country (more so than USA where political correctness reigns), and it’s\u00a0sportscasters are rawer and ruder than American counterparts. Sports are for fun, is a form of entertainment after all. The\u00a0sportscasters are entertainers. They aren’t being paid handsomely to read bible \u8001\u4e09\u7bc7, they’re paid to entertain us.<\/p>\n

    China is the most populous country\u00a0and\u00a0it’s relatively easy to gather up votes online. I hope the Chinese netizens use their power carefully.<\/p>\n

    It seems, China has developed an appetite for forcing an apology. Reportedly, they tried to extract an apology from Mack Horton after his comment on Sun Yang’s drug cheat (CNN<\/a>,\u00a0Stuff<\/a>, News<\/a>, Cosmo<\/a>\u00a0…) but was refused<\/a>, The Guardian reported<\/a>, at the same Rio Olympic.\u00a0It shows you’re insecure and unsophisticated – as just climbed down from the trees<\/a>\u00a0– Putin’s word (…you know, and probably need to have … the dirt washed out of their beards and hair<\/em>), it’s hard to get respect. You may extract an apology but you won’t get respect, which is what Chins is craving for.<\/p>\n

    If you want to play in the big boy league like a grownup – major league (I mean the world stage, and not just in sport but every aspect …) you can’t cry so easily so often. You need to behave like a\u00a0grownup IF you want to be treated like a grownup.<\/p>\n

    Also, the 14 years old might owe\u00a0McDonald a hearty thank you – given the competitive commercial value: he notice her and talked about her.<\/p>\n
