Long Island mixed

We are going to start the mixed doubles league at the beginning of November this year.  Anyone signing up before the final ratings are published (the end of November), will play based on their early start rating. (www.eastern.usta.com)  A player signing up after the final ratings are published, will go by the final rating.  (www.usta.com)

It will probably just be two or three matches being played before the 1st of the year.

The guidelines for matches will be:
Friday nights 7-11pm
Saturdays 10am-8pm
Sundays 10am-10pm
(There are one or two facilities that have three courts for two hours on a weeknight.  It can be offered as an option but if the opposing team is not able to play during the week, the weekend guidelines prevail.)

Roster fee is $25.00 and the match fee is $20.00 per player.  As tradition, home teams on Long Island provide new balls for each court, water, and lite refreshments after the match, so I will collect extra $5 to cover when we’re hosting. The home games will be played at Great Neck Estate, and it will not be on Fridays because I’ve the five courts for the season from 8:15 – 10:15 pm till May 2013, which I use for the team practice. Please let me know if you can make it, I’ll fit you in.  Or Sunday Night.

October 12: to register a team
October 14: must have three women and three men registered
October 19: the schedule is available
January 1, 2013: Roster deadline

The free loaders

An acquaintance has been inviting me to participate in his tennis tourney for a couple of years. Because his group is more toward social than tennis, and also always far away so I declined. I still remembered the very first time I went. It’s at the NTC and its free. I was puzzled. When I asked about the fees, he was elusive. Ok, I needed to do grocery shopping, so it’s one stone for two birds. As it turned out, they were using city courts and not many of them had city permits. They were young and new to the country/city; not many know how to play tennis.
Few tourneys later, the last one was at Long Island. Guess I’ve no choice but go.
“Where are you holding it?” I asked.
“Not sure yet, I’m still looking at Roslyn High school and

Sept 2:

we charge only $15 which includes t-shirt, food & drink and trophy … are there any courts in the city that you know of that will be free after the USOpen and that we can reserve for a whole day?

Don’t know any place that’s free

some of the courts we used before in NJ are free, so we will use those to keep the cost down ..

The date is set on 9/23. $20 per player.

there are some courts either in Roslyn or Old Westbury, but I have not seen him to show me the courts yet, I may go there tonight to see the conditions for the courts to make a final decision …

Making the story short, although I felt $20 was too high when he had no court cost but I gathered 7 of my mates and went. However, we went to the wrong school: it was at Middle School on the southern side of LIE and we were at the High School, north of LIE. We decided to stay and play among ourselves.

There were few other players at High school who decided to move to Middle to join the party. The communication was not good. He got newspaper to cover the event. I was thinking: it’s very bold. He has no permit nor the right to be there on the public courts which are for the residents only.

After a few players got lost, I pressed the club and was told, they don’t actually have an address! No wonder the GPS directs the drivers to Shore Drive in Kings Point on Manhasset Bay, where you’ll see Hemlock Dr., Central Drive or Mitchell Drive.

.
The easiest way is from either Bayview Avenue or Middle Neck Road, make left turn onto Cedar Drive (Or map this address: 67 Cedar Drive, Great Neck Estate, NY 11020). Make sure it’s not 11204 or Manhasset Bay. Take it to the end, (you’ll see the water) and make a right turn onto Shore Drive. At the end of the road, turn left into the park’s parking lot. The courts are on your right, entering from the club house that is facing the Little Neck Bay.

Please pick up a parking permit from the club – the village police can ticket you in the parking lot.
A friend forward me those two links: a newspaper article and an audio on Oct 22, 2012. Oh well, it’s certainly too late for me to change the venue but not too late for you to display a proper parking permit.

This club will be my Long Island 8.0‘s home base in 2013.

For the city slickers, LIRR is an option (1.5 miles to the club), take the Port Washington branch. As of now, departs fm Penn Station to Great Neck:
7:01 pm – 7:26 pm
7:14 pm – 7:48 pm
I or someone can pick you up.

Sept 24, 2012: I haven’t been there for a long while. It hasn’t changed much, except their courts and club got a face-lift. Reportedly they just opened for business today. There are still wires on the wall.

Kobi and sex

Men and women think differently, or men are from Mars, women are from Venus.
I say on court, often
“I’ll warm you up” when someone comes and needs little hitting before the game.
“We’ll have a foursome” when there are four humans ready to play.

One guy at tennis today thinks those sound very sexual, and went on telling us a story about his incompetency:

When he was in the 8th grade, he mistakenly said orgasm instead of organism in his chemistry or biology class. Everyone laughed and he had no idea why.

Ok, here is my innocent or impotency, I mean incompetency story:
A guy in my class said he would help me when I was pretty desperate to get a paper done.
“Lets me grab something to eat and be right back. ” he said.
“Don’t go, you can eat me.” I said to him and put my arm in front of his face.
The humming class suddenly became creepy quiet.
Oh well ..

The ESLR 2012

are you lonesome last night, little fuzzy?

The ESR early start league ratings came out already, men and women (2011 here). Few of my girls have been upgraded.

Congratulations pretty women, way to go.

Starting in January, the USTA league will now offer different age groups. There will be an 18 and over league and a 40 and over league. The coordinators need our preliminary thoughts on what level team we are planning on running.

  • 18 and over only
  • 40 and over only
  • Both

We will not to be committed to our survey responses.

hmmm .. I failed to see the merit: IF the rating works as it intended, the age gap should NOT be an issue. An eighteen years old may have endless energy, fresher legs and deadly force but most likely lack experience, patient a 50 years old usually possesses.

Our Sunday mixed game (since July 29): lost first set at tiebreak, rather decisively, won the second set at 4. We were up a break at 5-4 but failed to close the deal. I double faulted to give away my first serving game. I lost the my serve in the second set to fall behind 1-3. My left arm is on DL but saved few crucial points. I’ve been trying the single hand back hand but it isn’t as solid as double hand.
