The regular weeks are over (I didn’t play the last week due to the book event), here comes the semis: us against Gherkins. The last two weeks’ playoff score is independent: winner takes all.
Our A bracket did well (6-2) but our B bracket swiped (6-0), winning all six matches.
w/ Kim def Shmulik & Pattie (s)

Next week is the final, we’re playing against DD ..
A good evening for my team: we swiped the 2nd time: Bracket A and Bracket B, which puts us in the lead, with 5 wins. Although our wins is the same as Dinkers Anonymous but we’ve one more week to go and they don’t: next week is their bye week. We definitely will be in the playoffs: the rest of other 3 teams have the win of 1, 2, and 3.
The B Bracket played first. It’s a tie, so we played the tie break – the Dream Breaker – the skinny singles.
Each player rotates to play four point. The first team reaches the 25, wins (albeit on their own serve.)
25:22 seems close but we were comfortable from the beginning. The second match loss, luckily again, was absorbed by the dream breaker 25:19.
The second match I played with a substitute who’s a beginner: her athletic ability made her a bigger liability. However, she did marvelously well at the Dream Breaker – winning all her serves at the first round, and served out at 24 and won. In the dream breaker, I broke even with Angela (2-2) in the first round and won 3-1 the 2nd round.
The unsportsmanlike conduct occurred in the 2nd match when the opponents messed up with scores. Instead serving to me, the serve went to my partner, resulted in a winner. Tony was nice who timidly offered to replay but his partner said NO righteously. I was going to offer them a concession even we were behind. In tennis, concession is always offered. During the match, there’s a sea of red (the color of their t-shirt) and they yelled loudly when they won a point from Chris. It’s beneath me to cheer for a point that was won over a weak. I only applaud for a worthy point. They won the battle but lost the war.
Regarding this, I asked the coach Byron Freso who replied:
Hi Irene,
I appreciate your thoughtful questions—they always keep me engaged! It’s great that you ask for clarification rather than making assumptions, so please don’t hesitate to continue.
Regarding the scenario you described, I understand why a player might feel upset. Here’s how the rule applies:
1. Incorrect Score Called Before the Serve
If the server calls the wrong score and serves the ball, the receiver has the option to hold the ball and not return it. In this case, the rally is replayed.
2. Incorrect Score Called, But Rally Played
If the receiver returns the serve, the rally continues, and the outcome stands. The reasoning is that the rally was played in good faith, even if the score was called incorrectly or the wrong player served. In such cases, there is no replay.
3. Mid-Rally Interruption Due to Score Dispute
If a player stops the rally midway to argue that the score was incorrect or the wrong server was in play, that player is at fault. As a result:
The opponent wins the rally.
Depending on the format, this could mean a point for the opponent, a second serve, or a side out.
In Major League Pickleball (MLP), this results in a side out and a point for the opponent.
While the partner’s decision might have seemed harsh, it was correct according to the rules—there was no basis for a replay.
I hope this clarifies the situation for you! Let me know if you have any further questions.
After the tie break, which we clinched the win, Tony said
“Oh, you’re a good player.”
Kim praised me also. and I said, as usual, humbly “it’s everyone’s effort.” Tony said, “just take the compliment.”
Yes Sir.
Today, it’s the first time the opponent questioned my rating. Ava asked if I’m tier 2. When I replied that I’m a mere 3, she said, that’s not fair. Well, that’s my rating from Byron Freso.
A wonderful practice with my teammates. I won both sets played with Bette and Lynn.
I watched a few pickleball serve videos on YouTube. Pickleball evolves quickly. Among many pointers, I see that full swing serve motion is IN or, it has been but I didn’t know.
Depth is more important than power when serving. A short serve, unless it’s a winner, it will bring your opponent in quicker …
I watched a few pickleball videos on Youtube, and learnt that the serving hand should be lower than the paddle when serving: a new concept. So essentially, I served with my paddle vertical for the first time. Luckily, I’ve no double fault.
Round 1 of the A bracket is 2:1 and R2 4:2.
My B bracket is 2:1. I’ve the same teammate, to play mixed doubles and doubles:
w/ Carlos v Ronni & Jerry (sub): 25:20
w/ Karlina v Amy & Linie: 14:25
My court’s loss was erased by two other courts’ win.
One of the rules is, at 24, you’ve to serve out to win the 25. We were leading 24 to 15 and lost the last 5 points. Ehrrrr … the player on the right hand side will be serving at 24, which was me – my bad. So think about it before taking sides with your partner.
Two partners have very different outlook for this MLP. The more experienced plays with strategy and shoulder more shots, which I happily to concede.
But the lesser experienced one won’t do. Like the last match, the opponents hit all the ball to my P. I could have returned many of them but the partner won’t let me. Perhaps the player felt slight or what? In a team, there is NO ‘I’. I want to win.
The second game, one of the two girls said to me, “Oh Irene, thank you for applauding my shots.” I was bit startled: gosh, where were they from? This is very common courtesy and I offer it freely to all, especially my opponents. Oh well.
My teammate reminded me that I need to stay out when my partner serves.

It’s the first time I heard/learnt that the paddle should be held vertically, instead horizontal when dinking. I’ve taken Byron F’s private lesson but he didn’t correct me – said nothing. Oh well.

The five week long Minor League Pickleball starts tonight. This is the second season. I missed the first one due to travel to Antarctic last year.
There are five teams, all with whimsical names: Rally Cats (my team), Dinkers Anonymous, Dinkers & Drivers, Golden Gherkins 2.0 and Hell’s Kitchen.
Three teams have 14 players (we do) two have 15, dividing into two brackets: A (8 players play two matches each week) and B (6/7 players play two matches each time). B bracket is less skilled that includes me. Each team gets a bye week; ours comes next Tuesday, Feb 18. When the score is ties at 4:4 or 3:3, dream breaker is played.
Each team have a specific color of t shirt, substitutes wear white. All our matches used subs. I missed one; three male subs in the final.
The rally scoring is used, which means every point is scored, either by the serving team or receiving team. Normal recreational play uses sideout scoring system, only the server or serving team scores point.
First to win 25 points by two points, wins the match, on your own serve
When serving team loses the point, the OP not only gets a point but the right to serve next
Partners don’t switch side
At 13 point, two teams switch court
In case of a tie, skinny singles with 4 points each time, decides.
For example, if opponent serves and missed, we get a point, and get to serve next.
During this period, my game has improved – learned a few pointers:
The last two weeks March 18 and 25 are playoffs, score is independent: winner takes all.
I’m in bracket B, and our bracket has been doing great: won all our matches.
One observation: compare to tennis players, pickleball players are less athletic and rougher, in term of etiquette. For example, they’ve no qualm of exiting through another court while the ball is still in play in that court. I mean, you should wait, show some courtesy and respect!
The first week (today) I played two matches: one mixed doubles and one doubles. Both matches’ opponents were male.
w/ Carlos, def Rich M & Bill B: 28-26
w/ Karlina, def Rich M & Joe B: 26-24
The first match, OP chose to serve, I was receiving. It zoomed by me so fast, I didn’t see it.
Later in the game, Rich was serving even when I held up my paddle as I was rushing to my position. He served without hesitation, anyway. After the point was over, his captain who happened to there watching, said, “When they hold up paddle, you need to wait.”
Hmmmm… even you don’t know this rule, but should know common courtesy, don’t you? If the player isn’t in position, you wait.
The second match, down to the wire again.
When I was serving, Rich said he wasn’t looking. Hmmmm … I hope this isn’t a payback. But “I’m not even looking” is NOT a valid excuse. You play at server’s pace.
At 25-24, I said to my partner, “win by two points?”
“No, three points.” She said.
I turned to face the server and thinking better to confirm it, so I help up my hand. Just then Joe served to my partner. I stepped into the kitchen and blocked it casually.
My captain who just got there, said “that’s it.”
“No, I held up my hand.” I said.
“Yes, she did.” Joe said. I won’t know what would be the result if Joe didn’t speak up, back me up.
So two points it is.
And we come from behind to seal the victory.
Joe is less skilled than Rich but he has good control, able to consistently hit to my partner – they both are tier 4 players. Being by the kitchen line, there isn’t a room for me to cut in and hit back at a better angel or faster pace. Nevertheless, we cliched a win, which pleased me very much, given the unsportsmanship conduct.
I checked with coach Byron Freso, below is his reply ↓
The server is always in the driver’s seat. However, if the receiver is not ready, the server has to wait. In pickleball, they both have 10 seconds to serve or receive the ball.
There are three way the receiver can indicate they are not ready – paddle up, the other hand up, or back turned.
Aside from pickleball, today is the 14th of the lunar new year, the day before the 元宵節 / 元宵节 Lantern Festival when the moon is at fullest/the first full moon of the year, which also considered the Chinese Valentine’s Day.
It’s a busy day for me.
A beautiful full moon night 花好月圆夜

Hurricane Milton: eggs and milk are out @ WalMart delivery since Helene. There was a brief time that had eggs and milk but ran out quickly as Milton approaching. They’re till out, as of today, Oct 15. I had an order coming on Saturday, Oct 12, from Weee (they’ve eggs and milk) but had to cancel on Friday – still no power. Once the power is restored on Saturday morning, I placed the order on Sunday with WalMart, the first available deliver date is Thursday, Oct 17th – normally it’s within a few hours, which is why I’ve been using it. No milk, eggs and lemon till Oct 18.
At pool today, Matt said he was fine during the hurricane and he didn’t even loss power – I don’t know where he lives, assume not too far. He corrected me that the heater stops working once the temp hit 65 degrees. I previously thought was 55°.

It’s a 50° day, perfect for a warm drink: my bean-milk
So, we played the last game of the five week long team tourney: we won 3 out of eight, failing to be the spoiler, unfortunately.
One match, our mates got cheated with bad line call, detail will follow.
Some mates played three matches while I played only two:
w/ Dave, vs Beth n Melanie: 11-4
w/ Bev, vs Beth n Melanie: 7-11
With Dave, at 6, we forgot to switch. I won the next point, at 7:3:2. After switching side, I said, “let’s start from 6 …” We played it out and won 11-4. After it done, my partner pulled me aside, said, “never again to give a point away.”
“What if they disagree?” I said.
“Let me deal with it.”
… I understand his point of view, totally. But this is a neighborly tourney .. oh well. I don’t have killer instinct. Silly me.
Both matches went well. However, Linda’s match was marred with bad line calls.
Afterward, I went to swim. The water temperature is 76°: couldn’t be better!
Today’s games are flawless, everyone, us and opponents played well and no bad line calls at all.
My 3 games:
w/ Bev, v. Matt / Bob: 1-11
w/ Linda, v. Tia / Jeff, 11-9
w/ Barb v. Matt / Tia, 1-11
Ultimately, we won 4 and lost 4 games from the #1 standing team the Kitchen Crew. Their cumulative total win is at 23 (us at 14). One more match to go, against the current #2 who had 18 wins.
