Chang’s own US Open Final
It’s 1996 US Open Final. Chang has won French Open in 1989 as a 17 year old, the youngest. Pete Sampras has won his first grand slam title as a 19 years at Flushing Meadow, in 1990, also the youngest.
Two Americans meet in the final is always something to talk about. The two, in fact, grew up together and played each other often in the junior tour. Chang had an edge over Sampras but Pete dismissed Chang in straight set. Afterward, Chang answered the media that he was taller during the junior years, when asked why did he have winning record. Sampras would go on to win 12 more grand slam titles while Chang did none.
What was memorable for me of that Final, was a slow zooming shot, of an empty stadium, to a seat in the empty stadium. It’s Michael’s brother Carl and his wife or girl friend. She was talking to him and he wanted no part of the conversation. Perhaps she was trying to persuade him to leave? Carl was Michael’s coach. Pete would go on to win 12 more GS titles while Michael never arrived at a GS final.
Michael becomes Kei Nishikori’s coach and Carl shows up at the player’s box from time to time. Buy one get one free or just to come for the party?

Greed, is good?
Kei Nishikori lost in 3 sets, 3, 3 and 3. The disappointment is written all over his face. Considering after first doubting he would play at all (a cyst on his right foot which required surgery in August), shouldn’t he feel over-joyed?
Of course NOT.
It’s our human nature. Once we spot something within our reach, no matter how far and improbable the circumstance has been, we want that trophy or to accomplish that task.
The doper Cilic (intentional or unintentional…) won, that came with cool $3 million. Btw, Serena Williams earned $4 million, a record in tennis — $3 million for the title, plus a $1 million bonus for having had the best results during the North American summer hard-court circuit.
Way to go girl!

This must be the first year that so many past masters show up in doves to coach. Boris Becker, who at 17 won the Wimbledon in 1985. Michael Chang won French Open in 1989 at 17 too. They both set the record for being the youngest. However Becker would go on to win five more Grand Slam titles while Chang none.
The cubs of those four former champions (Becker and Edberg have 6 GS titles each and Chang and Ivanisevic have one each) made into semi finals. … Can one image IF Gael Monfils is more interested in winning a match than entertaining?
Among those four coaches, Becker changed the most from their playing days.

Well, I’m no expert of photograph but I do know this cover (Sept/Oct issue of Tennis) sucks. Maria Sharapova looks like a working girl and what’s happened to her right eye? The bottom photo I got from the web, her normal look, may or may not ps’ed.
And she lost to Wozniacki in three sets today.
