Little woman

Little Princess took a week off, and started her camp for two more weeks at the USTA.  Only 3 hours a day.  She got bit excited, anxious.  Playing in the shadow of the Center Court at Flushing Meadow is an experience.  But the teaching staff is very young, the student/coach ratio is high, hence the half price tag.  On the way home, she said that sooner or later, she’ll have to take a camp at the USTA .. .. but next year she’d rather have it at Port Washington if nowhere else is better.  She commented off handedly that most kids there are Hunter students.  Frank’s daughter is attending Hunter, and both his kids are there too.  First thought came to my mind was, how do they go to school?  She laughed, “Mom, I’m sure they take bus or subway .. ”  “By themselves?”

“Ya, Mom, by themselves. .. that’s how city kids live.. .. without their parents following around .. ..”  A pause, then she said quietly, “I knew you’d stay for the first day.” It rained yesterday, so we didn’t go.  At that moment, I felt little naked and vulnerable, she’s no longer a little wa wa baby.  Do I still treat her as a baby?  Of course you’re not Mom!  Do I follow you around too much?  Not really.  She assured me.  “I know you want to know what’s going on … it’s great that you know what’s going on in the world …”  Last time we were in the city, downtown, saw few gay couples.  I said so, as matter of fact, we don’t see many in the burb.  She replied, “Mom, I notice that, of course .. .. I’m not that oblivious to the world around me.”  Oblivious?  Gosh, I just learned a new vocabulary, now I need to learn how to pronounce it.

Gone swimming

I finally made to the Parkwoods pool!  On a stolen moment between King’s camp and jazz band.  Few years ago, we stopped joining the pool during the summer.  Thing hasn’t changed much, except I found the notice at the entrance that a new water park is on the horizon: a lazy river (on the now the playground), water slide, … The construction is scheduled to start the day after the pool is closed, which is Aug 25 2007 and to be opened on July 1, 2008.  The project is funded by bond and increasing the real estate tax.

We started going there when they were toddlers.  King’s tall for his age, so he had no problem going to the main pool.  But Pumpkin’s short and younger, couldn’t make the cut despite she’s better swimmer.  For the first couple of years, we had to make a do in the toddler’s pool.  Some life guards would give her the courtesy and let her stay at the main pool but others won’t – especially duringon a slow time – which’s really hurt.
I still remembered sat them both at the end of the lap pool, when it’s my time to do laps. Making sure their legs – more of feet – hang in the water so I could see their them when I flip turned.  They got kick out of it and splash the water lavishly and laughed every time I came around.  Lord, they grew up too fast!

The main pool has a section with 50 meters lanes, but is only open in the early morning to the master’s swimming club – with additional fee.  We’d going in early, surrounded by deadly tranquil environment, removing the dividers from the previous night to get the 50m lanes in place.  I wondered when the new pool is contracted, will there be a 50m lanes and what do they intend to use it for?  Shhhhsssish, frankly, I don’t really care about lazy river nor the water slide, but open up the 50m lanes during the public section would be a good idea.  Otherwise, why do they build it in the first place?

Her first match

cimg4521.JPGSlowpoke played her first match.  When I went to fetch her, arriving at 3:45pm, she’s serving for the match at 5:4, took first set with ease, 6:3.  Then the momentum changed – was I the curse?  The other girl started giving bad line calls .. and took the 2nd set at 6:4; and the 3rd at 6:3.  Both girls were exhausted.  They began the day at 9am, finished the last point at 4:47pm.  I was surprised at how few double faults did she have.

It’s tough one hour for me, watching your kid losing, especially when she should have won.  I sat motionless, but did find faults with the other girl, few calls were clearly wrong.  But it’s the experience Slowpoke has to learn, if she wants to play: part of the game.  Obviously she doesn’t have the mental strength the other girl has.  I know how intimidating to be out there alone, facing a friend or foe. The lunch was awful, according to her, (One other friend said other wise, lol ) “just some junk food, hot dogs, burgers ..”  Any pasta?  Yes there’s pasta, but tastes terrible…

Oh bummer

Port Washington tennis club has pretty new facility with 17 indoor hartur courts.  I played there few times.  At the testing, there were 5 kids.  The head pro with two assistants took the kids down and mentioned to the parents that we shall watch from the lounge.  If the age is any indication, PW is perhaps a more seriously club than ours: Slowpoke is the oldest.  The youngest girl looks like only 2 years old, jk, but you get the picture.  It’s her first time ever being evaluated and she’s very nerves, couldn’t get any thing over the net, lol.   As soon as the last kid went down, the door closed, parents pulled the chairs, sat by the window, the airy lounge became deadly silent and tense.  What’s for?  It’s not a match or anything, just to see which class the kid will be going to.  Right?  Then why did my heart surge or sink hung on her making or missing the shot?  We kept to ourselves as our kid one by one being appraised.  Not a single word crossed our lips, no ohs or wows. …  She got the Advanced rating which is the middle level.  I took her to the other side of the courts where individual and groups lessons were in session.
“I like it.”  Ok then, sweat it out here 9am-4pm 5 days a week.

Top spin

Slowpoke tried with Barry today and liked it.  He worked on her forehand top spin only.  She asked me few times about it, but I didn’t want to give her any advice since my forehand isn’t good.  It turns out, my backhand isn’t either.  Barry took few minutes to hit with me, and pointed out I don’t use my legs … never get up completely, which is wrong.  Ha.  ….. hmmmmm … I thought about Woodie: kiss, keep it simple sweetie.  I know tennis more than trading, hence I feel comfortable trying different ways and seeking techniques from various players and coaches.  Would I be better off stick with just one school of thought?  Maybe.  It seems to be working for me in trading.  Has my tennis improved over the years?  Yes.  A thin line.  Well, life itself has many options.

It Takes a Village

To raise a kid. .. Is that so?  Slowpoke was mad at me last night coz I was late picking her up.  My fault.  So, when she got to SAndy’s house this morning, it’s clearly I-dont-want-to-be here attitude.  Simon played with her, Lou played and entertained her, so did others … I was forgiven.  Phew.  It’s very sticky and hot out there.  She complained but toughed it out.  What made smile was she said little and looked mad, but heard others talking about Barry, so on the way home, she asked about who Barry is and said she’d like to try him.  You got it.

Season Finale

Sizable parents and grandparents showed up for the last game on home turf.  But I thought it’s rather thin, given the size of the team.  Slowpoke greeted me affectionately, made the coach ‘moan’ as she came to ask for sun screen: “I don’t want to look like 60 when I’m only 30.”   She had 3 opportunities to score but failed, uuurrrrrhrrrhhhh.  During one of the breaks, she said that I should wear the white carpi
