A new pool in Flushing

A little sorrow reminder that we lost 2012 Olympic to London, but this pool at Flushing Meadow near the US Open is great.  Check it out.  I felt like idiot that the whole thing built right under my nose and I had no idea.  I pulled into the parking lot under the high way, did I spot it – I drove by there hundred times!  As I walked toward the door, I couldn’t contain my joy, greeting everyone that crossed my path, they must think that I’m an escapee from the mental hospital.

It’s very similar to the one at Eisenhower Park, modern and spacious, and divided into small sections!!  So quintessential American.  It has the largest land and biggest wallet and their swimmers bring home gold, yet their pools are normally half the standard Olympic size: I just don’t get it!!!!  Pls some one light me up on this???

The locker room is small, feeling jammed with few small lockers!  I only got to do 20 laps because got to go to meet my Park Aveneue guy.  The wait to get a membership was long, even there weren’t that many applicants.  Now I’ll have a place to swim while the one I usually go to is under face lift – 塞翁失马 奄之非福?

The last supper

好景不长在 好花不长开? .. Our pool (the Town of North Hempstead at Michael J. Tully Park) will be closed for renovation starting next Friday.  Estimate 15 months. Sight.  I’ve been having great runs there.  Who knows how long does it take.  I didn’t get to swim before tennis today, but felt tired.  Swimming does pup me up, not tire me out.  When we did valley with Wah, I hardly moved my feet.  He joked, “it’s your arm hurt, now you claim your feet hurts too?”  Ya, something like that, :).  Lazy.  I meant to go to the pool just one more time!  We tend to take thing for granted when it is there.  I didn’t go there for over a year.  Now it’s going to be gone for a while, and I felt sad.

The following three photos ⇓ are on 2021.11.03: I began to swim here again

During change overs on the court, the other players were talking about the new pool just opened in Flushing.  I was checking out the LA Fitness and Equinox.  LA Fitness told me that they don’t give price out over the phone, “you have to come in.”  Wow, the fitness centers joint the salesmanship also?  So be it.  She relent.

“The initiation fee is from $100-$299 and monthly varies too.”

“Like what?”

“You’ll have to come in.”

I never went becasue I hate when people waste my time.

The mile long swimming pool

Can you believe this place in Chile? Imagine doing 10 laps of this swimming pool lengthwise! On a jet-ski maybe. It 1.3 km long, 800 mtrs wide at its shortest point and varies from ankle depth to 8 mtrs deep. It employs 41 life guards and has lifesaving devices which pop out of the bottom in various locations in case of rescue requirements. Built jointly by Korean/Japanese interests, it’s expected to have a business life scale of 15 years. Wonder how they clean the thing?  My goodness, this looks like the perfect paradise to me: the endless long pool.  Wait, one glitch: bottomlines , :).  But where is it in Chile?

What gets me high

I don’t like to run, so have no idea as what they’re talking about, but swimming gets me high, no any other sport could or would, tennis doesn’t even come close, so I know what they’re talking about.  The feeling after a swimming is that you can take on the www, whole wide world, 🙂 !!

Yesterday I visited Dr. Kim.  He’s in a relax mood and chatty.  Talked about his recent trip to China.  “For additional $200 [from Seoul], we could tour Beijing for 5 days, hotels and three meals and sightseeing included.  How did they do that is beyond me.”
“How’s Mrs. Kim?”
“She’s fine. Thank you.” She used to dab in when the nurse/receptionist wasn’t around who’s a very pleasant tall lady.
“Still playing tennis?” We used to have chat on tennis all the time.
A chuckle, “no, she’s in golf now.” We all laughed.
“Do you still swim?” When he first learned that I was swimming during my first pregnancy, he was horrified, if not annoyed. “What? You’re swimming? Don’t anyone see a pregnant lady? They allowed you to swim?”
Relax, Dr. It’s good for you. Toward my third trimester, he predicted that my delivery would be easy,
“Although I have no scientific proof ..”
I swam almost every day till my labor started. That morning, I stayed home, instead at the pool, watched Pete Sampras beat Andre Agassi in Wimbledon, while enduring the mild contraction. Pete went on to win his first championship there, followed by six more – Wondering what does Pete do with all those trophies for? Ladies can use theirs to line the dinner plates, :). One suggestion Pete: planting flowers. .. .. When it’s time to give birth later, Dr. Kim rushed in to the hospital, “hold on .. .. hold on .. let me put on my gloves.. ”  It went so fast, I almost regret – could I at least see what the color of the wall paper in the waiting room was?  The nurse first sent Golfer to register on another floor then had to page him in PA to come back, if he wanted to see the birth of his child.  Dr. Kim wasn’t pleased, “where’s father?”  One of the nurses explained, “we didn’t know she’ll be this fast .. is her first ..”  Did I savor the experience?  What experience?!?!
My second pregancy/delivery was the same, and he turned around to be a fan of swimming, at least for expectant mothers.  During the subquent years, he would often ask if I still swim and how’s my swim, but never about the babies he delivered.  Mrs. Kim would ask about kids.

Plenty time for a mile

I managed 40 laps under 20 minutes!  Total did 78 laps: 40 freestyle, 10 breast, 10 backstroke, 2 breast, 10 free timed at 4:45, 2 breast, 4 free timed at 1:45.  I had little bit more time today, so decided to improve my flip turns.  Thought about Steve‘s stress on streamline – when he demo that on the deck as if he could reach the ceiling, :).  Janet Evans is remembered for her long unconventional strokes and inexhaustible cardiorespiratory reserves – today I tried to stay under the water longer after the turns.  Steve used to pound on me: getting streamlined and should at least get pass the solid blue divider.  I always take a breath almost right after turning – lazy, I suppose.  The pool was empty.  Not sure what accelerated my timing today, was the streamlining and staying in the water longer did the trick?  And hopefully I can keep doing it.

Marge is a cute lady who comes to the pool every day, does 72 laps in about hour or so.  So I nick named her Ms. Mile – 72 laps equals to a mile.  She must be in her 80s, over sized thick glasses make her eyes enormous out of proportion.  Her limps are all bones and skins.  There is a Robert.  At first, I thought they’re a couple.  The first time I ran into Robert by the entrance, I was starlet at how tall he’s, well over 6′.  Guess in the water semi naked, we all look different.  Thank god we have cloth to cover.

Gone swimming

Finally, I made it to the pool 8am this morning!  OMG I still remember how to swim.  Everything looks the same, except the elevator is out of service.  When I left, there was an elder man on wheel chair trying to get down through the stairs.  I did 10 laps, without missing a single flip-turns but over 10 minutes: speed is gone so is my endurance.  Next 10 laps was mixed with breast with free and breast plus few pit stops.  When an annoying man joined the lane, I was about to start my last few laps.  He went ahead.  That’s fine, I didn’t have to work to hard to maintain the lead.  But after two laps, I caught up with him.  And again in another two laps.  So I told him to let me go.  He screamed, “then why didn’t you go?”  The lane is standard, if the swimmer isn’t considerate, it’s very hard for the one that’s behind to pass at the end.  So I gone ahead, swam hard, trying to maintain the lead.  It actually it’s great.   I ended up did straight 20 laps, caught up with him twice more.  I never thought I’d do 40 laps.  After that, I did another 10.  So 50 laps in total.  Wow … not bad for absent for so long .. SO Giants will win too, :-)

Gone swimming

Screenshot 2014-02-16 18.14.22

I finally made to the Parkwoods pool!  On a stolen moment between King’s camp and jazz band.  Few years ago, we stopped joining the pool during the summer.  Thing hasn’t changed much, except I found the notice at the entrance that a new water park is on the horizon: a lazy river (on the now the playground), water slide, … The construction is scheduled to start the day after the pool is closed, which is Aug 25 2007 and to be opened on July 1, 2008.  The project is funded by bond and increasing the real estate tax.

We started going there when they were toddlers.  King’s tall for his age, so he had no problem going to the main pool.  But Pumpkin’s short and younger, couldn’t make the cut despite she’s better swimmer.  For the first couple of years, we had to make a do in the toddler’s pool.  Some life guards would give her the courtesy and let her stay at the main pool but others won’t – especially duringon a slow time – which’s really hurt.
I still remembered sat them both at the end of the lap pool, when it’s my time to do laps. Making sure their legs – more of feet – hang in the water so I could see their them when I flip turned.  They got kick out of it and splash the water lavishly and laughed every time I came around.  Lord, they grew up too fast!

The main pool has a section with 50 meters lanes, but is only open in the early morning to the master’s swimming club – with additional fee.  We’d going in early, surrounded by deadly tranquil environment, removing the dividers from the previous night to get the 50m lanes in place.  I wondered when the new pool is contracted, will there be a 50m lanes and what do they intend to use it for?  Shhhhsssish, frankly, I don’t really care about lazy river nor the water slide, but open up the 50m lanes during the public section would be a good idea.  Otherwise, why do they build it in the first place?

Great to be swimming again

“Are you going to swim?”
This morning kids asked when they saw my dusty duffel bag.
Yes indeed I am.
It’s wonderful, the pool was kind of empty, Jen was there, my favored life guard who is the only one that regulates the pool.
“Did you do the flip turns?” Slowpoke asked me this afternoon.
“No love, my back still feels tender..” so after 20 or so laps, I gave up. In the parking lot, I ran into May and Yolanda the duo, “haven’t seen you in ages..” they exclaimed. Sorry gurls … we used to do lunch/dinner at least once a month. Lord, as I was driving away, thought to myself, is 40-lap a challenge now? Wah called again for tennis, is this going to be a regular thing now? Cool, only my back is not cooperating, 🙁
